Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care team members performed more than 1,000 cardiac surgeries in 2024, the highest number in South Jersey, and the third most in the state.
High-volume centers like ours see a greater number of cases, which allows surgeons to refine their skills, develop and share best practices, and ultimately provide better care for their patients.
“When it comes to a complex and often delicate procedure, like cardiac surgery, experience matters.”

The familiar adage — practice makes perfect — certainly applies to cardiac surgery.
Why is this milestone so important? Citing research documenting more than 300 studies, the National Institute of Health says1:
“Higher surgical volume is associated with better outcomes for patients undergoing complex procedures, including cardiac surgery. The more complex the surgery, the greater the volume-outcome relationship.”
Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care perform a broad range of surgical procedures from the complex to the more common, though no heart surgery should be considered “routine”.
Adds Dr. Rosenbloom: “Surgically, other than a full heart transplant, there isn’t any cardiac surgery we don’t perform, and transplants are on the horizon. Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive procedures, but we perform “traditional” open heart surgeries as needed.”
On almost a daily or hourly basis, Cooper and Inspira professionals are skillfully performing these demanding procedures, including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), minimally invasive aortic valve surgery, LVAD placement and pacemaker implants.
“This milestone is a testament to Cooper and Inspira’s commitment to providing high-quality cardiac care and improving the lives of our patients,” says Phillip A. Koren, MD, FACC, FSCAI, director of Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care, and Cooper Heart Institute.
“1,000 heart surgeries became possible because of the trust that patients, their families and the medical community place in our program’s expertise.”
“It’s tangible evidence of the dedication, skill, and teamwork on the part of the entire staff: surgeons, cardiologists, critical care intensivists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and support staff. We look forward to continuing to be of service to the communities we serve.”
